Visited the plot on Wednesday (5/14). The sub-drainage appears to have been very effective in removing the the water and allowing the roots to develop as you can see the difference between the two corn plants in the picture. You will notice the non -drained plant is shorter and the roots are also much shorter than the plant on the tiled ground. The water control structure’s have been closed to conserve moisture as the John Deere Field Connect moisture monitoring probe is indicating that the watertable has been sufficiently lowered to promote proper root development.
Dirks Sub-Irrigation/Drainage Test Plot
Dirks Dozing & Excavating is exited to inform that we have installed our first sub-irrigation system! We installed this twenty acre test plot this spring just in time to plant corn. The three inch laterals were installed on fifteen foot centers at two feet deep. We use HDPE pipe for the water supply line and use a butt fusion machine to make the connections. This fusion process makes a tee or any other fitting as strong or stronger than the pipe itself. Anyone interested can call or leave us a message on our website.
